Steve Berkowitz

Ask Jeeves

As the CEO of Ask Jeeves, Berkowitz oversees all operations for the Company. He joined Ask Jeeves as President of its Web Properties division in April 2001. After a successful turn around of the Company’s core business, Berkowitz was named CEO of Ask Jeeves in November 2003.

In early 2001 when Berkowitz came to Ask Jeeves, he was immediately tasked with orchestrating a turnaround for the Web Properties division. He focused on building a strong management team, innovating its search technology and improving the user experience. Berkowitz made the critical decision to acquire Teoma Technologies, a then little known company with a unique approach to Web-wide search. Shortly thereafter, Ask Jeeves launched the Teoma.com site and integrated its advanced search technology into the Company's flagship search site Ask.com and Ask.co.uk. Additionally, Berkowitz has worked to redesign Ask Jeeves, to improve its ease-of-use, and remove pop-ups and banner ads from the site in favor of a more contextually relevant search experience.

Berkowitz leverages his background as President and COO of IDG Books, where he had responsibility for all company functions. He is also responsible for helping expand the Dummies series of book titles, one of the largest consumer branded publications. He oversaw the expansion of the Dummies series, growing it from a technical computer support product to a celebrated consumer brand that addresses diverse consumer interests from gourmet cooking to sports to pet care. In addition he was responsible for the successful acquistion of other major consumer brands like Cliffs Notes, Frommers Travel Guides, Betty Crocker Cookbooks and JK Lasser Tax Guides. Berkowitz also served as President and CEO of Intermap Systems, an ASP content provider focused on online consumer healthcare information systems.
