Keynoter Lessig Outlines "Hybrid Economy" at Search Engine Strategies (SES) Chicago

Digital marketers convene to hear founder of Stanford's Center for Internet and Society

Chicago, IL - December 9, 2008 - SES Chicago 2008 kicked off Monday with an opening keynote by Stanford Law School Professor of Law Lawrence Lessig which stressed the need to rework copyright law to fit the digital era. The SES event, taking place at the Chicago Hilton, December 8th – 12th, gathers over 2000 marketers to discuss the latest digital industry topics.

In his session entitled "Remix: Making Art and Commerce Thrive in the Hybrid Economy," Lessig outlined three versions of the economy: commercial, sharing, and hybrid. The hybrid economy is the preferred model and the middle ground between the other two.

Lessig, founder of Stanford's Center for Internet and Society, stated that the copyright war is a failed war. Intellectual property extremism must be surrendered if society is to see a profitable future that culture and industry together could realize. Lessig's career has focused on the intersection of law, internet and technology, particularly as it relates to copyright.

Prior to Stanford, Lessig was the Berkman Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, and a Professor at the University of Chicago. He has won several awards including the Free Software Foundation's Freedom Award and was named one of Scientific American's Top 50 Visionaries for arguing "against interpretations of copyright that could stifle innovation and discourse online."

Search Engine Strategies Chicago boasts the Midwest's most comprehensive gathering of search engine marketing and optimization-related providers, partners and affiliates. Attendees flock to the event for the latest search engine marketing and search engine optimization research and insights.
